Thailand Announces 10,000 MW 'People's Solar' Initiative in PDP2026

According to a report by Prachachat Business, Thailand’s Minister of Industry, Ekniti Promphan, has introduced a new initiative under the Power Development Plan (PDP2026) aimed at transforming residential rooftops and private land into decentralized power plants. The project targets a total capacity of 10,000 megawatts over the next decade.

The initiative, dubbed 'People's Solar,' is designed to allow citizens to generate electricity and sell it back to the national grid at what the Ministry describes as a fair price. The broader goal of the PDP2026 is to increase the proportion of clean energy in Thailand’s power mix to as much as 89%, aligning with the country’s long-term Net Zero emissions targets and modern economic requirements.

For residents and expatriates, this policy could eventually lead to reduced household electricity costs and a more sustainable energy infrastructure. However, the proposal is currently in the public consultation phase, with only one week remaining for feedback. While the government has outlined the 10,000 MW target, specific details regarding the feed-in tariff rates, technical requirements for grid connection, and the exact timeline for implementation remain to be confirmed.
