Thailand Unveils PDP 2026 Draft to Boost Clean Energy for Data Centers

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Ministry of Energy has presented four scenarios for the draft Power Development Plan (PDP 2026-2093). Permanent Secretary Prasert Sinsukprasert stated that the core objective is to restructure the national power system to align with Net Zero 2050 goals and accommodate the rapid increase in electricity demand driven by data centers and electric vehicles.

To maintain competitiveness and attract foreign investment, the ministry is prioritizing clean, stable energy. While total requests for new power connections range between 22,000 and 30,000 megawatts, the Energy Policy and Planning Office has set a medium-term estimate of 8,800 megawatts specifically for data centers, based on projections ranging from 6,000 to nearly 20,000 megawatts. The proposed hybrid model aims to increase renewable energy usage to 73%, with a target average electricity cost of 3.88 baht per unit.

For residents and travelers, this shift toward a greener grid is intended to stabilize long-term energy costs and support the digital infrastructure necessary for Thailand’s economic growth. However, the plan is currently in the public consultation phase. Specific implementation timelines, final infrastructure investments, and the exact impact on future utility rates remain subject to further refinement and official approval.
