Monk Arrested for Drug Trafficking in Nakhon Si Thammarat
A 29-year-old monk was defrocked and arrested in Pak Phanang after authorities discovered him in possession of methamphetamine and crystal meth.
On September 8, 2026, authorities in Pak Phanang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, apprehended a 29-year-old monk identified as Thawatchai following reports of illicit drug activity within a local temple. According to Khaosod Online, the operation was initiated after the Pak Phanang District Chief received complaints regarding a monk acting as a drug dealer and using narcotics on temple grounds.
Upon arrival at the temple, officials observed the monk attempting to discard items into a nearby forest. A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of 200 methamphetamine pills and 1.11 grams of crystal methamphetamine. A mandatory urine test confirmed the presence of narcotics, resulting in a 'purple' (positive) test result. The individual was immediately defrocked by the temple’s abbot and taken into custody. He has confessed to the charges of distributing and consuming Category 1 narcotics and is currently being processed by the Pak Phanang Police Station.
