Blackchin Tilapia Detected in Kalasin’s Lam Pao Dam

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on September 8, 2026, the Kalasin Provincial Fisheries Office has confirmed the presence of the invasive blackchin tilapia in the Lam Pao Dam. Boonthong Paocharoen, the Kalasin Provincial Fisheries official, stated that preliminary laboratory results from the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Division identified the species based on its distinct physical characteristics. An official written confirmation is expected later this week.

This discovery is significant as Kalasin serves as a major hub for the Northeast’s aquatic economy. The region supports 1,225 giant freshwater prawn farmers across 8,500 rai of land, generating approximately 1 billion baht annually, alongside 425 tilapia cage-farming operations totaling over 12,000 cages.

For residents and those involved in the local economy, the arrival of this invasive species poses a potential threat to existing aquatic stocks. Provincial authorities, including the Governor and the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Division, are scheduled to conduct an in-depth inspection of the area on September 12 to assess the extent of the infestation. While the presence of the fish is confirmed, the full ecological and economic impact remains to be determined as officials coordinate further containment and monitoring efforts.
