Solar-Powered Agriculture Revitalizes Udon Thani Communities
A community-led project in Udon Thani is using solar energy and improved water management to create sustainable local livelihoods, reducing the need for residents to migrate for work.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, residents of Khok Lam and Saeng Aram villages in Udon Thani’s Nong Wua So district have transformed their local economy through a sustainable agricultural initiative. Historically, the region suffered from severe drought, forcing many villagers to seek employment in other provinces or abroad after the rice harvest season.
Following a petition to the Office of the Royal Development Projects Board, the late King Rama IX initiated the construction of the Huai Khlai Reservoir to address water shortages. While the reservoir provided a foundation, the area initially struggled with limited water distribution. A significant shift occurred when the Pid Thong Lang Phra Foundation collaborated with local authorities to implement a systematic water distribution network and establish community-led water management groups.
By integrating solar-powered systems and safe farming practices, the project has enabled year-round cultivation. For residents and visitors, this development highlights a shift toward sustainable rural tourism and local food security in the Isan region. While the project has successfully stabilized local incomes, the long-term scalability of these solar-powered agricultural models across other drought-prone areas in Thailand remains to be confirmed.
