Thai Ministry Orders Nationwide Inspection of Cemeteries and Crematoria

Deputy Minister of Interior, Phonphir Suwanchawi, has announced a directive to inspect all 1,200 cemeteries and crematoria across Thailand to verify their legal status. This move follows a specific incident in Chachoengsao province, where provincial authorities ordered the exhumation of bodies from a Jewish cemetery that was found to be operating without a proper permit.

According to the Deputy Minister, investigations into the Chachoengsao site revealed that four bodies had been interred there. It was determined that three of these burials occurred while the facility lacked the necessary operating license.

For residents and expatriates, this development highlights a tightening of regulatory oversight regarding funeral and burial services. While the government’s primary focus is on administrative compliance and the legality of land use for burial purposes, the situation underscores the importance of ensuring that religious or private burial sites are fully registered with local authorities.
