Olympic Medalist Worapoj Petchkoom Backs Nabil for National Boxing Team

2004 Olympic silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoom advocates for giving Nabil a chance to train with the Thai national boxing team to assess his potential for the 2028 Olympics.

Worapoj Petchkoom, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, has publicly supported integrating Nabil into the Thai national boxing squad. In a discussion with 1996 Olympic gold medalist Somluck Kamsing, who currently serves as a technical development advisor for the Thailand Boxing Association, Worapoj suggested that Nabil should be granted a trial period of five to six months. During this time, Nabil would be expected to adapt to the national team's rigorous training regimen and disciplinary standards.

Worapoj emphasized that the athlete should not be excluded from consideration, noting that improvements in footwork and speed could make him a viable contender for the 2028 Olympic Games. However, he cautioned that a clearer assessment of Thailand's overall boxing prospects will only be possible after observing the team's performance at the 20th Asian Games in Japan, scheduled for September 19 to October 4, 2026.

For residents and visitors interested in Thai sports, this development highlights the ongoing strategic preparations for the next Olympic cycle. While the potential inclusion of Nabil is a topic of discussion among boxing legends, his long-term role remains unconfirmed. The effectiveness of the current training approach and the team's readiness will be better understood following the upcoming Asian Games, which serve as a key benchmark for the national program.
