Phatthalung Returns Control of Swiftlet Nest Islands to Provincial Authorities
The Si-Ha Islands, a major swiftlet nesting site in Phatthalung, have been returned to provincial control following the conclusion of a concession agreement.
On September 8, 2026, provincial authorities in Phatthalung officially reclaimed the Si-Ha Islands, a significant habitat for swiftlets, from the previous concessionaire, Siam Nest 2022 Co., Ltd. The handover ceremony, led by provincial officials including Deputy Governor Chokchai Rak-kuea, marks the end of the current contract and initiates the process for selecting a new concession holder.
To ensure the protection of the nesting sites during this transition, the province has deployed 60 security personnel to guard the islands against illegal harvesting. Before the formal transfer, a committee inspected key nesting caves, including Tham Nam, Tham Niang Khoei, Tham Lod Din, Tham Thong Khwai, and Tham Ruen, to assess the condition of the area.
For residents and visitors, this transition highlights the ongoing efforts to manage and protect Thailand’s natural resources. While the islands are currently under strict security to prevent poaching, the process for future access or commercial activity remains subject to the upcoming selection of a new concessionaire. Details regarding the timeline for the new bidding process and any potential changes to environmental management policies have not yet been confirmed by the provincial committee.
