Oil Contamination Detected in Bangkok Drainage System
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt is overseeing cleanup efforts after oil leaked into the drainage system near Rama 3 Road, causing strong odors.
On September 8, 2026, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt inspected the drainage system near Chuea Phloeng Road and under the Rama 3 elevated bridge, located between the Khlong Toei and Yan Nawa districts. This follows an incident on the night of September 7, where oil leaked into the underground drainage network, resulting in a strong, pungent odor throughout the area.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, Shell has been assisting authorities by pumping approximately 5,000 liters of contaminated water from the system and providing technical expertise for analysis. To prevent the oil from spreading into public waterways, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has implemented a containment strategy, blocking and controlling water flow within a 50-meter 'Y-shaped' zone. Initial inspections indicate that the contamination is currently restricted to this controlled area.
For residents and travelers in the vicinity, the primary impact is the persistent smell of oil, though officials have confirmed that local traffic remains unaffected. The current priority is the extraction and proper disposal of the contaminated water to restore normal conditions. While the immediate spread has been halted, the exact source of the leak and the full extent of the environmental impact remain under investigation by the Khlong Toei District Office and relevant authorities.
