The Thai Ministry of Commerce clarifies that trade talks with the US are ongoing, with positive signs for future competitive tariff rates.
According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Ministry of Commerce has addressed recent reports regarding the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Thailand and the United States. Ministry spokesperson Korranit Nonjui clarified that while negotiations are progressing well, a final deal has not yet been reached.
Following discussions held on September 1, 2026, in Washington, D.C., between Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supajee Suthumpun and US trade representatives, both sides have agreed on the core substance of the agreement. Technical teams have been instructed to finalize the remaining details. However, the Ministry emphasized that this progress does not equate to a finalized deal or confirmed tariff rates.
For residents and travelers, this development is significant as it signals a potential for more competitive import tariff rates for Thailand in the future. However, the final outcome remains subject to ongoing US investigations under Section 301 regarding structural overcapacity. Consequently, the specific tariff rates that will apply to Thailand remain uncertain until these legal processes are concluded.
