Sun Bear Attacks Livestock in Prachin Buri
A 70-year-old resident in Prachin Buri encountered a sun bear that raided her chicken coop during a power outage.
On September 7, 2026, Khaosod Online reported an incident in Saphan Hin, Na Di District, Prachin Buri, where a sun bear invaded a private residence. According to Yosawat Thiansawat, Director of the Protected Area Regional Office 1 (Prachin Buri), the incident occurred during a heavy rainstorm and a village-wide power outage.
Boonma Ukaew, a 70-year-old resident, reported that she was alerted at approximately 5:00 AM by the frantic noise of her 30 chickens. Upon investigating with a flashlight, she encountered a large sun bear attacking her livestock. The animal, described as being human-sized, left behind claw marks measuring 140 mm.
Chaiya Huayhongthong, head of Khao Yai National Park, and local park officials have since initiated efforts to trap the animal and relocate it back into the deep forest of Khao Yai.
For residents and travelers in the vicinity of Khao Yai National Park, this incident serves as a reminder of the proximity of wildlife to residential areas, particularly during adverse weather conditions. While authorities are actively working to capture the bear, it remains to be confirmed if this specific animal is responsible for other recent livestock losses in the area or if it has been displaced from its natural habitat due to environmental factors.
