Environmental Inspection Launched at Illegal Sai Yok Mine
Thai authorities are testing water and soil samples near an illegal mining site in Kanchanaburi to assess potential heavy metal contamination.
On September 7, 2026, Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment initiated an investigation into an illegal mining operation located in Moo 9, Ban Chai Thung, Wang Krachae sub-district, Sai Yok district, Kanchanaburi province. Minister Suchart Chomklin ordered the inspection to monitor environmental impacts and prevent potential long-term harm to local natural resources and public health.
According to Khaosod Online, a joint team comprising the Kanchanaburi Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment, the Royal Forest Department, and the Pollution Control Department visited the site to collect water and soil samples. These samples are currently undergoing laboratory analysis to determine if heavy metals or other contaminants have leaked into the surrounding environment.
For residents and visitors in the Sai Yok area, this investigation is a precautionary measure to ensure water quality and environmental safety. While the authorities are acting to mitigate risks, the full extent of the contamination remains to be confirmed. Once the laboratory results are finalized, the findings will be submitted to the Governor of Kanchanaburi to determine the next legal steps and necessary public safety actions. Until then, the site remains under official scrutiny to prevent further illegal activity and environmental degradation.
