Thailand Reduces Temporary Electricity Rates for Households
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is lowering electricity costs for residential properties lacking permanent registration, aligning them with standard household rates.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced a significant reduction in electricity charges for temporary residential connections. Previously, households without permanent registration were subject to a flat rate of 6.80 baht per unit. Under the new policy, these rates will be adjusted to match standard residential electricity pricing, where the first 200 units will be charged at no more than 3 baht per unit.
This policy shift, driven by the Minister of Energy through the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), aims to provide financial relief to nearly 400,000 households across Thailand. For residents living in temporary housing or those who have not yet secured permanent registration, this change represents a substantial decrease in monthly utility expenses.
While this adjustment is intended to ease the cost of living, residents should note that the specific implementation details and the exact billing cycle for when these reduced rates will appear on individual invoices remain subject to official confirmation from local electricity authorities. Travelers staying in long-term rentals or temporary accommodations may wish to verify their utility billing status with their landlords to see if these changes apply to their specific rental agreements.
