Thailand Adjusts Electricity Rates for Households Without Permanent Registration
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has lowered electricity costs for residents living in homes without permanent registration, effective September 2026.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has implemented a significant change to electricity billing for households lacking permanent registration, often categorized as 'temporary' power users. Previously, these residents were charged a flat rate of 6.8024 baht per unit, which was significantly higher than standard residential rates.
Following a resolution from the National Energy Policy Council on July 15, 2026, the ERC has transitioned these households to the standard residential rate structure. Starting with the September 2026 billing cycle, the first 200 units of electricity will be charged at a rate not exceeding 3 baht per unit. Consumption exceeding 200 units will follow the standard progressive residential tariff.
This policy shift is intended to provide financial relief to low-income residents who use electricity for permanent living purposes but were previously penalized by the temporary meter classification. To qualify for this adjustment, residents must demonstrate that the electricity is used for residential purposes and must have a payment history of at least six months.
For residents or long-term visitors, this change may lower monthly utility expenses. However, it remains to be confirmed how individual households should formally apply or verify their eligibility with their local electricity authority to ensure their meter is reclassified correctly.
