Khon Kaen Villagers Revive Traditional Rain-Seeking Ritual with Doraemon

On August 4, 2026, over 100 residents of Khon Kaen’s Khon Chim sub-district organized a traditional 'Nang Maew' (cat parade) rain-seeking ritual. According to Khaosod Online, the area has suffered from a two-month dry spell, causing rice crops to wither and threatening the local harvest. Unlike traditional ceremonies that historically used live cats, the villagers opted for stuffed cat toys and a Doraemon doll placed inside a cage, which they paraded for three kilometers while splashing water.

Chaiwat Dokmaingam, head of the Khon Chim Subdistrict Administrative Organization, noted that the lack of irrigation systems makes the area entirely dependent on rainfall. Some farmers have attempted to sow seeds three times without success due to the hardened, dry soil. While the community has requested assistance from the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation, unfavorable weather conditions have prevented cloud-seeding operations.

For residents and visitors, this event highlights the stark contrast in weather patterns across Thailand, where some regions face flooding while others struggle with critical water shortages. The ritual serves as a cultural expression of hope alongside ongoing government efforts.
