Ultra Trail Laplae Organizers Address Death of 64-Year-Old Runner

Event organizers have released a timeline regarding the medical emergency and subsequent death of a 64-year-old participant during the Ultra Trail Laplae race.

Following the death of 64-year-old runner Chaiyapat Bunnop during the Ultra Trail Laplae event, organizers have issued a formal timeline to clarify the emergency response. According to Khaosod Online, the runner was participating in the 20-kilometer category when he collapsed on the course.

Organizers stated that the race began at 5:30 a.m. Upon receiving reports from other runners that a participant had fainted, staff dispatched a medical van from the starting point. Medical personnel from Phitsanulok Hospital, who were stationed at the event, reported that they performed continuous CPR and utilized an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) twice in an attempt to stabilize the runner. The organizers explained that the delay in releasing this information was due to the need to gather accurate data regarding the incident.

For participants and visitors, this incident highlights the importance of understanding the physical demands of trail running in Thailand’s climate and the medical protocols in place at remote sporting events. While the organizers have provided a sequence of events, the official cause of death and the full medical report remain subject to further confirmation by health authorities. Those planning to participate in similar endurance events are encouraged to ensure they are physically prepared and aware of the specific medical support available on-site.
