Bank of Thailand Proposes SME Credit Boost Expansion

The Bank of Thailand is planning to propose a new credit guarantee initiative to increase annual SME lending to 100 billion baht.

According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) is preparing to propose a plan to Ekniti Nitithanprapas aimed at enhancing credit guarantees for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The initiative seeks to collaborate with the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG) to encourage commercial banks to increase lending to the SME sector by 100 billion baht annually.

This proposal follows the performance of the existing 'SME Credit Boost' program. Data indicates that after six months of operation, the program has successfully approved 65.319 billion baht in loans. The BOT has noted that the SME sector continues to face significant risks, necessitating further support to maintain liquidity and economic stability.

For residents and business owners in Thailand, this development is significant as it signals a potential increase in capital availability for local businesses, which may influence the broader economic landscape and service availability. However, the proposal is currently in the planning stage. It remains to be confirmed how the specific mechanisms of the new guarantee scheme will be structured and when the formal implementation might begin. Stakeholders should monitor official announcements from the Bank of Thailand for further updates on the approval and rollout of this credit expansion strategy.
