Pollution Cleanup Ordered at Rama 9 Data Center
Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has ordered an urgent cleanup of oil-contaminated wastewater at a data center in the Rama 9 area to prevent environmental damage.
On September 7, 2026, Suchart Chomklin, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, directed the Pollution Control Department (PCD) to expedite the remediation of oil-contaminated water and sediment at the DAMAC Digital Thailand (BKK 01) data center in Bangkok’s Rama 9 district.
According to Khaosod Online, the directive follows the discovery of oil contamination within the facility’s drainage sumps and adjacent public drainage pipes. Authorities are concerned that the pollutants could migrate into the nearby Sam Sen Nai Canal. On September 6, 2026, the PCD, in coordination with the Huai Khwang District Office, inspected the site to oversee the cleanup process, which involves the facility hiring a specialized contractor to manage the waste.
For residents and travelers in the Rama 9 area, this situation highlights ongoing efforts to maintain local water quality and prevent industrial runoff from affecting public waterways. While the cleanup is underway, the PCD has been instructed to continue monitoring environmental quality in the vicinity until the area is fully restored to normal conditions. It remains to be confirmed how long the remediation process will take and whether any further environmental impact has occurred beyond the immediate drainage system. The ministry has emphasized that the containment of the contaminated water is a priority to ensure the safety of the local canal network.
