U.S. Navy Personnel Visit Boosts Pattaya Tourism During Low Season

According to Khaosod Online, Thanet Supornsahasrangsi, President of the Chonburi Tourism Federation, reported that the arrival of about 5,000 U.S. Navy personnel from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) provided a significant boost to the Pattaya and Chonburi tourism sectors between September 2 and September 6, 2026.

While the number of personnel coming ashore at any given time was smaller than historical perceptions might suggest, their presence helped revitalize the area during the current low season. Local businesses, including restaurants, shopping centers, retail shops, and international hotel chains, were identified as the primary beneficiaries of this influx.

Notably, Thanet highlighted a shift in the behavior of modern U.S. military personnel compared to past stereotypes. Observations indicate that these visitors are less focused on nightlife, bars, and alcohol consumption. Instead, they are increasingly engaging in diverse activities, such as visiting local attractions, dining at various restaurants, and shopping. This change in travel habits suggests a broader economic impact across different sectors of the local economy rather than just the entertainment industry.
