Vatican City Aims for Future Olympic Recognition
Vatican City is working to establish an internationally recognized sports organization with the long-term goal of Olympic participation.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Vatican is actively developing its sports infrastructure to eventually seek recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The city-state has already taken steps toward international integration by participating in the Mediterranean Games twice through 'Athletica Vaticana,' its official sports organization.
Giampaolo Mattei, president of Athletica Vaticana, noted that the organization currently supports 500 members across nine different sports. During the most recent Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, Vatican athletes competed in padel, fencing, and cycling. Mattei emphasized that the organization is inclusive, representing a diverse community of approximately 2,000 residents, including Swiss Guards, police, hospital technicians, and educators, rather than being limited to clergy.
For travelers and residents interested in the intersection of sports and diplomacy, this development highlights the Vatican's growing soft-power initiatives. While the organization is expanding, the path to full Olympic recognition remains a long-term ambition.
