New Fossil and Geological Museum Opens in Surat Thani
Surat Thani has officially inaugurated a new museum dedicated to paleontology and natural history, aiming to diversify the region's tourism beyond its famous islands.
On August 28, 2026, the Fossil, Geological, and Natural History Museum in Surat Thani province was officially opened. The ceremony was led by Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, alongside Yongyuth Nakwiroj, Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources.
According to Khaosod Online, the facility is the result of a 13-year construction project spanning from 2010 to 2023. The museum is housed in a three-story building covering 16,000 square meters on a 10-rai plot. It features modern exhibits and unique photo opportunities, designed to take visitors on a journey through 4.6 billion years of Earth's history.
For travelers and residents, the museum offers a new educational tourism destination. Minister Suchart emphasized that the site should serve as a continuous learning hub for schools in Surat Thani and the broader southern region, rather than just an occasional attraction. By integrating geological and paleontological history into the local tourism landscape, officials hope to provide an alternative to the province's traditional beach and island-focused travel. The Department of Mineral Resources intends for the site to function as a major classroom for the south, supporting research and knowledge exchange. While the museum is now open, the long-term impact on local community revenue and the specific schedule for school integration programs remain to be seen as the facility establishes its operational routine.
