Students Targeted in Sophisticated Call Center Scam

The Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC) has intervened after three students were coerced into defrauding their parents, resulting in millions of baht in losses.

According to a report by Thai Post on September 6, 2026, the Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC) recently assisted three university students who fell victim to a coordinated call center fraud scheme. In a single day, these individuals were targeted by criminals who used intimidation and coercion to force them into fabricating stories to deceive their parents.

The perpetrators reportedly pressured the students to claim they needed urgent funds for tuition or scholarships, leading the parents to transfer millions of baht to the scammers. This incident highlights the evolving tactics of criminal networks operating within Thailand, which are increasingly leveraging psychological manipulation to exploit young people and their families.

For residents and visitors, this case serves as a reminder of the prevalence of sophisticated phone-based fraud in the region. While the ACSC has stepped in to provide support, the full extent of the criminal network behind these specific incidents remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific methods used to identify the victims or the current status of the funds. Those in Thailand are advised to remain vigilant regarding unsolicited calls requesting urgent financial transfers, regardless of the caller's claims or the emotional pressure applied.
