Pollution Control Department Addresses Oil Contamination at Rama 9 Data Center
Authorities are overseeing the cleanup of oil-contaminated wastewater at the DAMAC Digital Thailand data center in Rama 9 to prevent environmental leakage.
On September 6, 2026, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) of Thailand, in coordination with the Huai Khwang District Office, initiated an emergency response to address oil contamination at the DAMAC Digital Thailand (BKK 01) data center located in the Rama 9 area. According to Dr. Surin Worakitthamrong, Director-General of the PCD, the contamination was discovered within the company’s drainage sumps and extended into public drainage pipes, posing a significant risk of pollutants entering the Rama 9 Canal.
To mitigate the environmental impact, the data center has contracted GENCO, a waste management firm, to handle the cleanup. The remediation process involves using sandbags to contain the contaminated water and sediment, applying oil-dispersing agents, and vacuuming the waste for off-site treatment. Similar containment measures have been applied to the public drainage system to ensure no oil reaches the canal. GENCO has confirmed that all wastewater generated during the cleaning process will be transported to a certified facility for proper disposal.
For residents and visitors in the Rama 9 area, this incident highlights ongoing efforts to maintain local water quality and prevent industrial runoff. While the immediate risk to the canal is being managed, the PCD plans to conduct follow-up inspections to ensure the area is fully decontaminated. Further updates regarding the final clearance of the site are expected once the cleanup operations conclude.
