Proposed Restructuring of Thailand's Energy Sector

According to a report by Thai Post on September 5, 2026, a group of prominent figures—including Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Attawit Suwannapakdee, and Rosana Tositrakul—have reached a consensus on a proposal to overhaul Thailand's energy sector. The core of their plan involves dissolving the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and merging its functions into the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC).

The proponents argue that this structural change is necessary to curb private sector monopolies and increase the electricity production capacity of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to over 50%. They suggest that this shift would bolster state revenue and ultimately reduce the financial burden on the public regarding energy costs.

For residents and long-term visitors, this proposal is significant as it targets the fundamental mechanisms that determine electricity pricing and energy policy in the country. If implemented, such a restructuring could lead to shifts in utility costs and energy availability. However, it is important to note that this is currently a proposal put forward by specific political figures.
