A 35-year-old man was arrested in Buriram province after setting fire to a backhoe, claiming he believed his neighbor intended to use it to demolish his home.
On September 4, 2026, police in Lam Plai Mat, Buriram, apprehended a 35-year-old man identified as Chatchai following an arson incident. According to Khaosod Online, the suspect admitted to setting fire to a backhoe parked near his residence during the previous night, causing approximately 200,000 baht in damages.
Chatchai stated that he had long-standing grievances with his neighbor regarding wastewater and pesticide use. Under the influence of two methamphetamine pills and a bottle of white liquor, he experienced a paranoid episode upon seeing the construction vehicle. He mistakenly believed his neighbor had hired the backhoe to destroy his house. To prevent this, he pried open the fuel tank and ignited the engine compartment with oil-soaked fabric.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the risks associated with localized disputes involving substance abuse.
