Motorist Exposes Repeat Hitchhiker Scam in Samut Sakhon
A Thai woman shared her experience with a man who repeatedly asks for rides and money under false pretenses, highlighting a growing concern regarding opportunistic panhandling.
On September 4, 2026, a report from Khaosod Online highlighted a viral social media post involving a middle-aged man who frequently solicits rides from strangers. A female driver recounted allowing the man to ride in the back of her pickup truck after he claimed he needed to reach Samut Sakhon and had been rejected by other motorists.
Upon reaching the destination, the man reportedly demanded money for food and further travel. The driver, however, recognized the individual from a previous encounter. She noted that during their prior meeting, the same man had claimed his home was in Southern Thailand, successfully convincing her to drive him to the Pran Buri intersection, where he then solicited funds for his journey home. After she refused his latest request for money, the man reportedly dismissed her without gratitude.
This incident serves as a reminder for residents and travelers in Thailand to exercise caution when offering assistance to strangers on the road. While Thai culture is known for its generosity toward those in need, this case illustrates how some individuals may exploit that kindness through deceptive narratives.
