Thai FA Limits VAR Usage in Thai League 2 Due to Financial Constraints
The Football Association of Thailand has announced that VAR will only be used in the final five matches and playoffs of the 2026/27 Thai League 2 season to manage mounting debt.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand) has officially announced a reduction in the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the 2026/27 Thai League 2 season. Due to significant financial challenges, including a previous debt burden of 360 million baht—of which over 200 million baht remains to be paid in monthly installments—the association is implementing strict budget management measures.
Under this new policy, VAR will only be utilized during the final five matches of the regular season and the subsequent playoff rounds. The league, which officially commenced on September 4, 2026, will operate without VAR for the majority of the season. The FA stated that these measures are necessary to ensure the continued operation of all professional men’s and women’s football leagues under its jurisdiction.
