Vietnam Sentences 11 to Death in Major Drug Trafficking Case

According to a report by Khaosod Online, a Vietnamese court has handed down death sentences to 11 individuals involved in one of the country's largest drug trafficking operations. The group was part of a larger pool of 227 defendants who received sentences ranging from 18 months to life imprisonment. Among those sentenced to death is Ha Danh Nam, identified by investigators as the ringleader responsible for sourcing and importing narcotics from France into Vietnam.

The investigation originated in March 2023, following the arrest of four Vietnam Airlines flight attendants who arrived in Ho Chi Minh City from Paris. Authorities discovered over 10 kilograms of MDMA and ketamine concealed within 157 toothpaste tubes. Reports indicate that the flight attendants were unaware they were transporting illicit substances. Investigators found that the network utilized various consumer goods—including dietary supplements, detergent, mouthwash, and coffee—to hide drugs before shipping them via courier services or luggage.

For travelers and residents in the region, this case highlights the extreme severity of drug-related offenses in Southeast Asia. While this incident occurred in Vietnam, it serves as a reminder of the strict enforcement policies regarding the transport of goods across international borders.
