Fatal Accident Involving Songthaew on Mae Sariang-Hot Route
A 55-year-old passenger died after jumping from a moving songthaew on a mountainous road in Mae Hong Son province.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a tragic incident occurred on September 2, 2026, on the Mae Sariang-Hot route (Highway 108) in Mae Hong Son province. A 55-year-old female passenger lost her life after jumping from a 'yellow' songthaew (a local passenger truck) while it was navigating a mountainous section of the road.
The driver, a 67-year-old man, reported to the Mae Sariang Police Station that he was transporting seven passengers from Mae Sariang district toward Hot district in Chiang Mai. While ascending a hill near the Mae Ho police checkpoint, the vehicle encountered a landslide that restricted traffic to a single lane. The driver stated that the vehicle began to roll backward, prompting the passenger to jump out in a state of panic. Tragically, she was subsequently struck by the vehicle.
For travelers and residents, this incident highlights the inherent risks of navigating mountainous terrain in Northern Thailand, particularly during periods of inclement weather or road obstructions like landslides. While the driver has provided his statement to the police, the investigation into the exact mechanical circumstances of the vehicle's rollback and the sequence of events remains ongoing.
