EGAT Upgrades Power Grid to Support 70% Renewable Energy Target

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is currently upgrading the national power grid to handle a projected increase in renewable energy, which could eventually account for over 70% of the country's energy mix. Warit Rattanachuen, EGAT’s Deputy Governor for Strategy, stated at the 'Beyond ESG: Thailand Transition' seminar that the grid must become more flexible to maintain stability as the nation moves toward its Net Zero 2050 goal.

For residents and travelers, this transition is significant as it aims to ensure long-term energy security despite the inherent variability of renewable sources like solar and wind. To manage this, EGAT is focusing on enhancing the responsiveness of existing power plants, upgrading transmission equipment, and expanding energy storage solutions, including pumped hydro and battery systems. The authority also highlighted the potential role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in bolstering grid stability.

While these upgrades are intended to stabilize the power supply, the specific timeline for the full implementation of these technological shifts and the exact impact on future electricity pricing remain to be confirmed. The strategy emphasizes that because electricity cannot be easily stored for long periods at low cost, the grid must maintain a reliable reserve capacity to prevent disruptions during maintenance or unexpected outages.
