Bank of Thailand to Regulate 'Buy Now, Pay Later' Services

The Bank of Thailand plans to introduce new oversight for 'Buy Now, Pay Later' services in the fourth quarter of 2026 to address rapid market growth and potential financial risks.

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) is preparing to implement stricter regulations on 'Buy Now, Pay Later' (BNPL) services by the fourth quarter of 2026. BOT Governor Withai Rattanakorn announced the initiative during the 'Beyond ESG: Thailand Transition' seminar, noting that the sector has experienced a tenfold increase in usage over the past four years, with the user base expanding from 600,000 to several million.

This regulatory move is part of a broader BOT strategy to address structural economic issues, including household debt, SME challenges, and the mitigation of illicit financial activities, such as money laundering through gold trading. For residents and travelers, this development signals a shift toward tighter consumer credit oversight. While the BNPL model has provided convenient short-term financing for many, the upcoming rules aim to ensure fairer financial services and reduce systemic risks associated with rapid credit expansion.

Details regarding the specific requirements for service providers and the exact impact on consumer eligibility remain to be confirmed. Stakeholders are awaiting further announcements from the central bank to understand how these measures will affect existing installment plans and digital payment platforms operating within the country.
