EGAT Explores Small Modular Reactors to Support Thailand’s Renewable Energy Goals
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is upgrading its power grid to accommodate a shift toward renewable energy, with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) under consideration as a stable clean energy source.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is currently accelerating upgrades to the national power grid. This initiative is designed to align with the 2026 Power Development Plan (PDP), which aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the country's power mix to over 70%.
As part of this transition, EGAT has identified Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a potential option for providing stable, clean electricity. Warit Rattanachuen, a deputy governor at EGAT, stated that the organization is currently in the process of studying the technology, relevant legal frameworks, and public acceptance. These assessments are critical steps that must be completed before any final decisions regarding the adoption of SMR technology can be made.
