Pollution Control Department Investigates Data Center Over Odor Complaints
Thai environmental officials are investigating a Rama 9 data center following reports of strong fuel odors in the surrounding community.
On September 3, 2026, officials from Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) conducted an inspection of a data center located in the Rama 9 area. The investigation was initiated following complaints from local residents regarding a persistent, strong smell of fuel in the vicinity of the facility.
During the three-hour operation, environmental experts inspected the site’s fuel storage systems and drainage infrastructure. Upon opening a manhole cover outside the facility, officials confirmed the presence of a noticeable fuel odor. Preliminary on-site testing detected hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Environmental scientist Jaturong Assawasowan stated that water samples were collected from the facility’s holding tanks and surrounding drainage points for detailed laboratory analysis to determine the exact nature and concentration of the pollutants.
For residents and visitors in the Rama 9 area, this investigation highlights potential environmental concerns regarding industrial operations in residential zones. While the presence of chemical vapors has been detected, the health implications and the specific source of the leakage remain under investigation. The PCD is currently awaiting comprehensive laboratory results to confirm the extent of the environmental impact.
