Legal Dispute Over NBTC Chair Qualifications Continues

A legal battle concerning the leadership of Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has entered a new phase. According to a report by Thai Post, the Supreme Administrative Court has issued an order requiring the Central Administrative Court to accept a lawsuit filed by the current NBTC Chairman, Dr. Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck.

Dr. Sarana initiated this legal action to challenge a decision made by the NBTC Selection Committee, which had previously ruled that he possessed prohibited characteristics and lacked the necessary qualifications to serve as Chairman from the outset. By ordering the lower court to accept the case, the Supreme Administrative Court has also directed the Central Administrative Court to deliberate on Dr. Sarana’s request for temporary measures or interim relief pending a final judgment.

For residents and expatriates, this ongoing dispute is significant as the NBTC oversees critical telecommunications infrastructure, broadcasting standards, and digital services across the country. Leadership instability within such a regulatory body can potentially influence policy implementation, licensing, and the overall regulatory environment for digital services.
