Thailand Approves 106 Billion Baht Southern Double-Track Railway Expansion
The Thai Cabinet has greenlit three major double-track railway projects in the south to enhance logistics connectivity between China, Malaysia, and the Indian Ocean.
During a mobile cabinet meeting in Songkhla, the Thai government officially approved the second phase of the southern double-track railway project. According to Khaosod Online, the initiative involves a total investment of 106.798 billion baht across three specific segments: Chumphon to Surat Thani, Surat Thani to Hat Yai Junction, and Hat Yai Junction to Padang Besar.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn stated that these projects aim to complete critical 'missing links' in the national rail network. By establishing a more robust rail infrastructure, the government intends to facilitate seamless logistics from Southern China through Laos and down to the Thai southern border.
For residents and travelers, this development is significant as it promises to modernize regional transport, potentially reducing transit times for agricultural exports like durian to Chinese markets. Furthermore, the project is designed to create a low-cost rail link to the Indian Ocean, which could reshape regional trade dynamics.
