Hat Yai Enhances Flood Defenses and Early Warning Systems
Thai officials are upgrading flood mitigation infrastructure in Hat Yai, including increased reservoir capacity and improved drainage, alongside a new 24-hour radar warning system.
According to a report by Prachachat Business on September 2, 2026, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit accompanied the Prime Minister to Hat Yai to inspect integrated flood prevention systems. The government is moving forward with plans to expand the capacity of the Khlong Rian monkey cheek (water retention area) by 250,000 cubic meters. Additionally, efforts are underway to increase the drainage rate of Khlong Toei from 160 to 250 cubic meters per second.
Simultaneously, the Agricultural Research Development Agency (ARDA) is promoting the 'Radar4Flood' research project. This technology is designed to provide flood warnings up to 24 hours in advance, which could significantly improve preparedness for residents and visitors in the region.
For travelers and residents, these infrastructure improvements are intended to mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding, which has historically affected the area. While these measures aim to enhance safety, the effectiveness of the new drainage capacity and the implementation timeline for the full-scale deployment of the Radar4Flood system remain to be confirmed.
