Thailand Updates Inspection Rules for Public Motorcycles

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) has updated regulations for public motorcycles (yellow license plates), including both traditional motorcycle taxis and app-based ride-hailing services. Thitipat Thaijongrak, Director of the Bureau of Automotive Engineering and DLT spokesperson, announced that these vehicles can now undergo mandatory inspections up to one month before their annual tax payment deadline.

Furthermore, the DLT has expanded the options for vehicles with overdue taxes. Motorcycles that have missed tax payments for more than one year, but not exceeding three years, are now permitted to undergo inspections at any private vehicle inspection center (ตรอ.) nationwide. Alternatively, owners may still choose to have their vehicles inspected at the DLT office where the vehicle is registered or where the motorcycle taxi stand is located.

These changes, enacted under the 2025 Registrar’s Announcement, aim to streamline the administrative process, improve convenience for operators, and reduce congestion at government transport offices. For residents and travelers who rely on motorcycle taxis, these measures are intended to ensure that vehicles remain compliant with safety and regulatory standards. While these rules are now in effect, operators should verify specific documentation requirements with their local transport office or preferred inspection center to ensure a smooth compliance process.
