Academic Calls for Regulation of Thailand’s Data Center Industry

According to a report by Khaosod Online, Assistant Professor Non Nuchmon from the Faculty of Economics at Thammasat University has highlighted a regulatory gap in Thailand’s rapidly expanding data center sector. The academic noted that Thailand is currently the only nation in ASEAN that permits data center operations without specific conditions or 'green' frameworks, contrasting with stricter policies in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Professor Nuchmon suggests that the government should enact a dedicated 'Data Center Act' to provide clear policy guidelines. The proposal emphasizes the need for mandatory local content requirements, ensuring that domestic businesses are integrated into the supply chain rather than benefiting only from initial construction. Furthermore, the academic raised concerns regarding the environmental impact, noting that the high energy and water consumption of these facilities could hinder Thailand’s national greenhouse gas reduction targets, especially given the current limitations of alternative energy sources.
