Thai Authorities Crack Down on Online Counterfeit Goods

According to a report by Khaosod Online, Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has intensified its efforts to combat the rise of counterfeit goods sold through digital platforms. Director-General Oramon Sapthaweetham stated that as Thailand’s e-commerce market reached an estimated value of 35.5 billion USD (approximately 1.13 trillion THB) in 2025, the prevalence of sophisticated intellectual property violations has increased.

Between January and July 2026, authorities successfully prosecuted 140 cases, resulting in the seizure of 322,077 counterfeit items. The DIP is currently utilizing a 'Notice and Takedown' protocol established through Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with major online platforms to expedite the removal of illicit listings.

For residents and travelers, this crackdown highlights the ongoing risks associated with purchasing branded goods online, as counterfeit items may be misrepresented as authentic. While these enforcement actions aim to protect consumers and rights holders, the rapid evolution of digital commerce means that illicit trade remains a persistent challenge. It remains to be confirmed how these enforcement measures will impact the long-term availability of specific product categories on popular e-commerce sites, and whether further legislative updates will be introduced to address emerging digital distribution methods.
