Dwarf Sperm Whale Found Stranded on Koh Lanta Beach
A dwarf sperm whale discovered stranded on Ao Nui Beach in Krabi has died despite rescue efforts by local authorities.
On September 2, 2026, local residents reported a stranded dwarf sperm whale on Ao Nui Beach, located on Koh Lanta Yai in Krabi province. Pramote Kaewnam, head of the Mu Ko Lanta National Park, confirmed that officials arrived to find the whale, which measured approximately 256 centimeters in length and weighed 200 kilograms, in a severely injured state.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, park officials coordinated with the Lower Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center to provide emergency care and transport the animal for rehabilitation. Despite these efforts, the whale passed away, leaving local officials and observers saddened.
For residents and travelers in the area, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges regarding marine life conservation in the Andaman region. While the whale was recovered for a necropsy to determine the cause of death, officials have stated that the exact reason for the stranding and subsequent passing remains unconfirmed at this time.
