BMTA Inspects NEX Factory for New Electric Bus Fleet
The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is preparing to roll out 1,520 electric buses by March 2027, featuring design upgrades and new charging infrastructure.
According to Prachachat Business, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) has inspected the NEX factory to oversee the production of 1,520 new electric buses. The project aims to reduce fuel and maintenance costs by approximately 4.1 billion baht.
Key design features include a Universal Design layout to improve accessibility, the addition of three emergency exits, and the relocation of batteries to the roof to mitigate risks associated with flooding. To support the fleet, the BMTA is accelerating the construction of 12 charging stations capable of providing a full charge in three hours. Two prototype vehicles are scheduled for initial field testing soon.
For residents and travelers, this transition represents a significant modernization of Bangkok’s public transport network, potentially leading to more reliable and environmentally friendly commuting options. While the project is moving forward, the exact rollout schedule for specific routes and the full operational readiness of all 12 charging stations remain to be confirmed as the March 2027 target date approaches.
