Flood Alert Issued for Mekong River Provinces
Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has warned of rising water levels in four provinces along the Mekong River from September 1–6, 2026.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued an urgent alert for four provinces situated along the Mekong River: Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, and Mukdahan. The warning, effective from September 1 to September 6, 2026, follows an assessment by the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR).
Authorities attribute the rising water levels to heavy rainfall in the upper regions and southern China, compounded by the influence of monsoon troughs and the southwest monsoon affecting Thailand and Laos. Projections indicate that water levels in these areas could rise by approximately 2.0 to 4.8 meters, potentially leading to overflow and localized flooding. The DDPM has instructed local officials to monitor the situation closely and maintain 24-hour emergency response readiness to assist affected residents.
