Authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima have criticized the use of monk attire in provocative social media content following a controversial performance at a local festival.
On September 1, 2026, Dr. Pornpana Saengaroon, Director of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Office of Buddhism, publicly addressed a viral video featuring individuals dressed as Buddhist monks performing provocative dances on stage. The incident reportedly took place during a pomelo festival in the Sung Noen District.
According to Khaosod Online, Dr. Pornpana expressed significant concern after receiving the footage from various community stakeholders. She stated that using religious attire and the persona of monks for comedic effect or to generate social media engagement is highly inappropriate and damaging to the image of the religion. Dr. Pornpana noted that she has previously raised concerns regarding such parodies with the parliamentary committee on religion, arts, and culture, emphasizing that these actions should not be normalized.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious symbols in Thailand. While public festivals are common, the misuse of monastic robes for entertainment can lead to public outcry and official scrutiny.
