Government Moves to Resolve 18-Year Stalled Songkhla Aquarium Project
Education Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong is proposing a new committee to address the long-delayed 'Hoi Sang' aquarium project in Songkhla.
On September 1, 2026, Education Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong announced plans to present a proposal to the Cabinet regarding the long-stalled Songkhla Lake Marine Life Education Center, commonly known as the 'Hoi Sang' (Conch) Aquarium. The project, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, has remained unfinished since construction began in 2007.
According to Khaosod Online, the Minister visited the Tinsulanonda Fisheries College on August 31 to inspect the site. Following discussions with relevant agencies, the government aims to establish a joint committee to resolve the 18-year-old impasse. This committee would include representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization, the Council of State, the Treasury Department, the Bureau of the Budget, and the Comptroller General's Department.
For residents and visitors, this development is significant as the facility was intended to serve as a major landmark and educational hub for the region. While the proposal seeks to finally move the project forward, the specific timeline for completion and the final budget requirements remain to be confirmed by the Cabinet.
