Thailand Strengthens Southern Power Grid and ASEAN Connectivity

According to Khaosod Online, Thailand’s Ministry of Energy is focusing on the Khlong Ngae high-voltage station in Songkhla province to enhance the southern region's electrical stability. Permanent Secretary Prasert Sinsukprasert recently inspected the site, which serves as a critical link for power transmission between central and southern Thailand, as well as a long-standing connection point for electricity trade with Malaysia established in 2002.

This initiative is part of the broader Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), which aims to develop an integrated ASEAN Power Grid. The upgrades include the installation of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) system, one of five being deployed nationwide to improve grid efficiency and accommodate clean energy integration. Additionally, officials visited the Trans Thai-Malaysia (Thailand) facility in Chana district to review energy infrastructure readiness.

For residents and travelers, these developments are intended to increase the reliability of the power supply in southern Thailand and provide greater flexibility during emergencies. While the project aims to support the transition to clean energy and regional cooperation, the specific timeline for the full integration of these new systems into the national grid remains to be confirmed by the Ministry of Energy.
