Thai Government Promotes Red-Whiskered Bulbul Breeding as Economic Opportunity

According to a report by Thai Post, the Thai government has officially moved to support the breeding of the red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) as a viable economic activity. Ratchada Thanadirek, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) is prepared to facilitate programs aimed at promoting this bird as a source of income for local communities.

This policy shift follows a recent ministerial regulation from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, which removed the red-whiskered bulbul from the list of protected wildlife. This change effectively legalizes the possession and breeding of the species, which has long been a popular cultural hobby in Southern Thailand.

For residents and visitors, this development signals a potential increase in bird-related commerce and local competitions in the southern provinces.
