Thailand Issues Heavy Rain and Tropical Storm Warning
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall and potential flash floods across multiple regions through September 2, 2026.
On September 1, 2026, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) released announcement No. 12, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across upper Thailand. This weather pattern is expected to persist until September 2, 2026. The TMD attributes the increased precipitation to a monsoon trough moving across the northern and upper northeastern regions toward a tropical depression in southern China, combined with a strong southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
Regions specifically identified as being at risk include the western parts of the North and Central regions, the upper Northeast, and the East. Residents and travelers in these areas are advised to exercise caution regarding potential flash floods and forest runoff, particularly near hillsides and low-lying areas. Authorities have specifically warned against traveling through routes prone to recurring flooding.
Additionally, maritime conditions in the upper Andaman Sea are expected to be rough, with wave heights reaching 2 to 3 meters, and potentially higher in areas experiencing thunderstorms. While the TMD has identified 43 provinces as being at risk for heavy rain, travelers should monitor local updates for specific provincial impacts. It remains to be confirmed how the tropical storm 'Sodel' will further influence these conditions as it develops in the region.
