Thailand Advances Two Major Southern Bridge Projects
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has pledged support for two major infrastructure projects in Southern Thailand, emphasizing environmental protection alongside economic development.
On August 31, 2026, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin announced official support for two significant infrastructure projects led by the Department of Rural Roads. The projects include a bridge spanning Songkhla Lake to connect Songkhla and Phatthalung provinces, and a bridge connecting Koh Lanta in Krabi province.
Speaking at a signing ceremony in Hat Yai, Minister Suchart emphasized that the government aims to improve quality of life and economic opportunities through these developments. Crucially, the Ministry intends to integrate environmental oversight into the construction process. This is particularly vital for the Songkhla Lake area, which serves as a critical ecosystem for local fisheries and the habitat of the Irrawaddy dolphin.
For residents and travelers, these projects represent a long-term effort to improve regional connectivity and reduce travel times between these southern provinces. The Ministry has committed to collaborating with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to mitigate ecological impacts.
