Thai Government Proposes 400 Billion Baht Loan to Address Energy Crisis

Energy Minister Eknat Prompan and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas have defended a 400 billion baht loan decree aimed at restructuring Thailand's energy sector to reduce import dependency.

On August 31, 2026, Thai officials presented a 400 billion baht loan decree to the Senate, intended to mitigate the impacts of the ongoing energy crisis. According to Khaosod Online, Energy Minister Eknat Prompan and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas emphasized that these funds are not intended as a short-term subsidy or a 'blank check' to cover budget deficits. Instead, the government plans to use the capital as seed money to restructure the national energy framework, specifically by promoting domestic energy sources and solar power to decrease reliance on imported oil.

Officials highlighted that Thailand consumes approximately 100 million liters of oil daily, with over 90% of crude oil being imported. The recent surge in global oil prices—rising from 60-70 dollars per barrel to over 100 dollars—has placed significant pressure on the domestic economy. Without intervention, officials warned that diesel prices could potentially exceed 60-70 baht per liter.

For residents and travelers, this initiative signals a long-term government effort to stabilize energy costs and reduce vulnerability to global market volatility. While the proposal aims to secure the country's energy future, the specific implementation timeline and the exact mechanisms for how these funds will be distributed to support solar and domestic energy projects remain to be confirmed by the Senate.
