Thailand Weather Alert: Heavy Rains and Rough Seas Expected

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather alert effective August 31, 2026, noting that a monsoon trough is currently positioned across the upper North and Northeast regions. This system, combined with a rather strong southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf, is expected to bring increased rainfall across the country.

Residents and travelers should prepare for isolated heavy rains, with the potential for very heavy downpours in the North, Northeast, and East. Marine conditions are also affected; the upper Andaman Sea is experiencing waves between 2 and 3 meters, which may exceed 3 meters during thundershowers. In the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf, wave heights are expected to reach approximately 2 meters, rising higher during storms.

Additionally, the TMD is monitoring a tropical depression currently located south of China. While this system is forecast to intensify and move toward Taiwan between September 3 and 4, 2026, officials have confirmed that it is not expected to move toward Thailand. Travelers are advised to monitor official weather updates regularly before planning departures. As weather patterns can shift rapidly, residents should remain alert to local announcements regarding potential flooding or travel disruptions in affected regions.
